What About Earthly Religions?

The young man masterfully managed his horse as he and the other Comanche hunters rode across the plains, rapidly approaching a seemingly endless herd of buffalo. As he had done many times before, he pinpointed one animal within range, and skillfully drew his bow and shot it in just the right place to bring it down. The hunt was over in just a few minutes, and as the rest of the herd thundered away, the hunters rode over to the buffalo that had been harvested, just enough to feed and clothe their band of wandering Indians.

The young man inspected his kill as he waited for the women to arrive to begin the butchering process. And then, as he did every time, he offered a prayer of thanks to the buffalo's spirit, grateful for its sacrifice and the benefits it would bring to his people.

A Religious Buffet

Have you ever wondered about other religions like this? We may think it ridiculous that anyone would pray to an animal after killing it, but unusual religions like this have existed and continue to be practiced by many across the world. Is there any validity in these? How can we compare them to Christianity?

The world today is truly a religious buffet. We are invited to try out different religions, and see which ones fit our personal preferences and opinions. And who's to say we have to stick to just one? Go ahead and become an Neo-pagan Buddhist Jew, if there are parts of all of those religions that you like! Just help yourself, says the world.

The trouble with this mindset is that it rejects any notion of objective truth. Instead of trying to find out who or what is to be worshiped, or what divine being actually exists, many just choose a religion based on their own ideas.

Many Native Americans, like our Comanche hunter introduced above, traditionally believed in animism, the idea that animals, plants, and even inanimate objects possessed souls. Followers of Buddhism and Hindu believe that after death, a person is reincarnated as another being, and woe be to your soul if you were evil, for then you may be a pig in the next life! Ancient pagan rituals are being revived as those interested in the occult practice a neo-paganism. With all these widely different religions, how can the honest seeker of truth make sense of it all?

Clarity in the Word of God

If you are a believer in the God of the Bible, then you must accept that the Bible is His Word, given to us through inspiration and true in all its statements. Keeping this in mind, consider the following scripture written by the apostle Paul:

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts unto uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves: for that they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. (Romans 1:22-25)

The Almighty God, through the pen of Paul, tells us here the digression of humanity. They knew Him at one time, but they fancied themselves wiser than God, beginning to make idols and calling them divine, and assigning spirit powers to the things that God had created. Isn't this just what we see today? The truth is available, but so many throw it away to believe a lie. The awesome power of God Most High should compel us to serve Him, and Him alone.

Speaking of Christ, Acts 4:12 says: And in none other is there salvation: for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, wherein we must be saved.

The message is clear: Any religion that claims to offer salvation apart from Christ is false. It may bring temporary contentment to its followers, but there is no eternal reward, and those who follow such earthly religions will meet the same condemnation as everyone else who does not follow Christ.

Make Your Own Personalized God!

But this attitude of choosing your own object of worship is not limited to these earthly religions. Christians, Muslims, and many who claim to be Christians say that they are following the same God. But is this true? Hardly. You see, this culture of the religious buffet is found here as well: Is there something about God's nature that makes you uncomfortable? No problem, just go with "God is love"! Are some of God's commands a bit too much for you to handle? No worries! God understands, right?

Romans 11:22 says "Behold then the goodness and severity of God." We've got to realize that God is not some concept that we can fit into our own mold, but that we should be molding ourselves to accept Who God truly is. God has given us commands, and if we fail to obey those commands, there is no way that we will enjoy His goodness.

Discovering the God of Heaven and Earth

Many worship the earth. Many worship a god or gods who inhabit the heavens. But the truth is that there is One eternal, transcendent being who created the entire physical realm and is present in every place: the God of Heaven and Earth (Acts 14:11-17). Won't you get to know Him today? Ignorance is no excuse, and He doesn't want you to perish. (2 Peter 3:9) Learn who God is and how you can obey Him.
